What is Yoga?
Yoga consists of various exercises that stimulate, relax
and revitalise the mind and body. There are a bewildering
selection of yoga classes available as yoga is currently enjoying
a major resurgence. The main two types are 'astranga'
which is dynamic and suitable for those looking for a
more vigorous workout and 'hatha' is a more gentle form
of yoga that consists of stretches and meditation.
Where does one find yoga classes?
Yoga classes are popular and can be found taking place
from village halls to local health clubs; sanctuary clubs
to high street cafes. Use our online search facility to find
your local class.
Are there different levels of yoga?
Yes, generally there is introduction, then onto beginners
and immediate and so on. It can depend on age and
movement as to how quickly one attains the next level
and what type of yoga class suits one best. There is no
element of competition; each person is encouraged to
concentrate on what they personally want to achieve.
Do yoga teachers train?
Yes, the British Wheel of Yoga is the main body who
register trained yoga teachers. Find out about your
teacher before you sign up to classes, where they
have trained and how long they have been practicising yoga.
Are they insured?
Not all yoga teachers are - so do check before you start classes.
What are the costs of yoga lessons?
Yoga costs vary from district to district and can be for what
is termed 'drop-in' classes - where you do not book, but simply
turn up on the day. There are classes which form part of a
course and costs are calculated for the number of lessons
in that course. Some clubs require yearly fees or membership
- so check beforehand.
What yoga equipment do I need to buy?
Usually, you need to buy a yoga mat, wear loose clothing and take
a bottle of water, if you wish. Should other props be necessary, such as blocks, the teacher should inform you prior to signing
up to classes and where you can purchase these.
Some locations provide showers for students, particularly
after the sessions when following a lesson of 'hot yoga'
where one perspires considerably - so a towel is an essential
item.
How often should I participate?
It is up to the individual if one wants to follow a course intensely
or at a relaxed pace. Once the basics are taught and known,
many students devote some time, daily, at home to a yoga routine.
In health terms there appear to be real benefits that become evident at around eight months of regular practice, so it pays to
try and stick to a personal plan.
What is the difference between pilates and yoga?
Pilates and yoga share some 500 similar movements but pilates
can be highly recommended by back specialists such as
osteopaths and chiropractors for its emphasis on gentle back movement and exercise - ideal if one has suffered from a back accident previously.
What are yoga breaks?
There are many yoga breaks and retreats publicised in consumer magazines and online both, for
the UK and abroad. This can be a great way for busy city
dwellers to enjoy a superb relaxed holiday somewhere sunny.
Can yoga help you to diet?
Yoga isn't normally associated with slimming but can help one to exercise and slim coupled with a good eating plan.
Yoga books and tapes
There are many yoga books, cds and dvd’s now freely available on the high
street or online. Once you have mastered the basic elements, these
can be an ideal way of continuing at home without the need to necessarily visit a yoga class so regularly.
