Pilates is recommended by a number of health practitioners including chiropractors, osteopaths and acupuncturists.

Why?

Sharing some of the same principles of yoga, pilates is designed to stretch and lengthen muscles in a way that's entirely non- competitive. Pilates is good for those who wish to undertake exercise but, perhaps, haven't for sometime or especially, with back or other joint problems.

What does pilates consist of?

Pilates has over 500 movements in total, one can learn them at one's own pace and improve strength, flexibility and well being.

What does pilates help?

Pilates corrects breathing technique, helps physical co-ordination, body positioning, balance, strength and flexibility.

How often should I exercise?

Practiced on a regular basis, pilates will soon show noticeable effects on your toning of your body, breathing, improvement in shape.

Where can I learn pilates?

At home, you can learn doing 'floor mat' exercises to begin. There are DVD's on sale to follow showing slow bending and stretching movements, books to buy - or if you wish, join a local class.

What pilates classes are available?

Pilates classes run throughout the UK. Some classes have specialised equipment used by professionally trained teachers. Call the teachers today and talk through your requirements.

What is reformer?

One of the most widely used pieces of pilates equipment which aims to exercise the whole body.

What is the cost of classes?

This can vary from region to region and how long the instruction takes. Generally, classes last for one hour and may be booked in advance for a course of lessons with the teacher or be a 'drop-in' class, simply payable when one visits. Some larger venues can charge membership fees or yearly subscriptions. Check with your chosen venue and ask for this information at time of booking.

How do I know my pilates teacher is trained and insured?

Check one of the directory listings under 'classes' and ask the teacher to show you their professional registration and insurance.

What equipment do I need?

Very little to start. A floor mat obtainable from any good online stockist or shop, wear loose baggy clothing, a DVD if exercising at home and maybe a bottle of water if visiting a class for refreshment.

How often should I practice pilates?

Aim to practice pilates about three times a week to get the full benefit of the exercises. Please remember to always seek medical advice before undertaking physical exercises.
