What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a therapy using techniques of manipulation by hand and is particularly good for musculoskeletal problems.

Are Osteopaths regulated?

In May 2000, osteopaths became the first UK complementary and alternative practitioners to become regulated by Government in the same way as doctors and dentists are.

Therefore, osteopath practitioners have completed a recognised course of training and have indemnity insurance. It is illegal to set up in practice as an osteopath without such registration.

Where do I find details of an Osteopath?

This online search directory provides links to most Osteopaths in the UK .

Referrals

Most people in their every day life have come across another family member of friend having had treatment or know of a highly recommended osteopath practitioner. This can be one of the best ways to find an osteopath, so ask around family and friends first.

GP's refer patients to osteopaths, don't they?

Increasingly so, for problems originating in bones, joints, muscles and other soft tissue. GP's will know of local osteopaths so ask also at your local surgery or health centre.

How much does it cost to be treated?

Treatment costs can vary. Check with the osteopath prior to starting any treatment; osteopaths often give discounts for courses of treatment.

Can one claim on health insurance?

Most Health Insurance Providers, these days, have plans that include Osteopathy. Check before undertaking any treatment as some Insurance firms will not pay unless they approve the practitioner and treatment plan being suggested first.

How long do treatments take?

Your first osteopathic treatment may take longer because the practitioner will be taking a full account of your medical history, current and past, asking detailed lifestyle questions before examination. It is advisable to take along any list of current and recent medication being taken, reports of x-rays taken and any other reports from other specialists such as chiropractors or physiotherapists.

Regular treatments after this may vary between half an hour and an hour.

Do I have to undress?

Osteopaths use their hands to apply pressure and manipulate the relevant parts of the body to release stresses and tension and mobilise joints. This may be done in loose baggy clothing, but it is advisable to expect to strip down to underwear at treatment sessions.

Can Osteopaths sign me off sick?

Yes, just as GP's can, an osteopath can sign a sick note.

Where do I complain if I'm not satisfied?

If you are not satisfied with any part of the service, it is best to talk to the practitioner or failing this, the senior practitioner at the osteopathic practice.

In more extreme cases, it is the role of the Regulator to offer patients a complaints procedure and take up an necessary issues. Likewise, it is the Regulator's responsibility for their Profession's development.

Treatable symptoms may include changes to posture during pregnancy, rsi, postural problems, back pain, period pain, arthritis pain, sports injuries, shoulder and neck pain, sleeping difficulties, neuralgia and sinus pain, teeth grinding, irritable bowel syndrome, sciatica, mobility problems, tennis elbow, asthma and respiratory problems.
