Are complementary and alternative therapies available on health insurance plans?

Osteopathy and Chiropractic are both regulated professions and treatments are now mostly available on insurers health plans.

Acupuncture appears to be widely accepted and most health insurers provide some plans and some limited homeopathy treatments too. However, other treatments are not so widely recognised yet.

How do I know if my treatment is covered?

Some health insurers will provide very informative information in their information packs listing each therapy separately that they will insure, others simpy list 'alternative therapies'. You will need to establish if the health plan does provide for the therapies that you may wish to undertake.

How do I find out?

medimatters.co.uk have linked with the most major health insurer firms that are currently offering alternative therapy cover. Some health insurers require you to be referred by your GP and/or even by a Consultant.

When do I apply?

You can apply for health insurance at any time; there are numerous plans available. However some firms require you to disclose all medical information and will not pay out insurance if you have already received similar treatments, or can levy an excess figure or a period of time before allowing another similar claim.

What plans are available?

There are hundreds of different types of policies on the market trying to fit all types of individual and busy family lifestyles.

Some insurers offer travel and personal accident insurance incentives alongside health insurance to join them or even childcare allowance and bereavement services. Other firms reward by referring family and friends to their health firm. It is a matter of lifestyle choice.

What happens if I decide to change my mind?

If you have signed up to a policy and wish to change it, it will be essential to let the health firm know quickly within the time allowed as a cooling off period where you may cancel if you wish to do so within a set time period stated by the firm.

Can I get covered on all health insurers plans?

No, health insurers do have the right to refuse you, or levy excesses, for example, for pre-existing conditions, emergency or urgent treatment, chronic (long-term) medical problems.

There are some firms offering 'moratorium policies' where you do not need to have a medical examination or provide information about your medical history but may not be able to claim for a period of time or cash excesses are levied.

Generally, the healthier you are, the least claims you have previously made or sought medical attention, the less your premium will be.

Health insurers are now encouraging lower premiums being offered if you join a health club, don't smoke and are of average weight compared to height.

What happens if I take NHS treatment up instead?

Some health plans will reward you if you decide to take advantage of NHS treatment that may/can be offered instead of making a claim on your health care policy.
