What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a complementary therapy where remedies are
prepared from a wide range of mostly plant and mineral sources
in a complex process, given today, in very diluted forms from a
base 'tinctures' or by sugar-based tablets, pills, granules and
powders.
Homeopathy has been used in the UK for over two hundred
years.
Most homeopaths claim that not only are symptoms treated, but it
is holistic in taking into account a person's mind, body and spirit,
working from 'the inside out'.
What symptoms are treatable by Homeopathy?
Claims are made that a vast number of common, every day
symptoms, such as headaches, coughs and sneezes, shingles,
and even post natal depression can be treated by homeopaths.
Are Homeopathicthe remedies safe?
Generally yes, probably because the remedies being given are
present in such low concentrations. Sometimes, it is noted by
homeopathic practitioners, that a complaint may get slightly worse before
getting better. This is known as the 'healing' reaction and is
said to be a necessary part of the healing process.
When should I take the remedies?
Generally these should be taken in advance of a meal and no
food or drink should be consumed fifteen minutes or so after
these. Some homeopaths believe using strong smelling substances
like essential oils, alcohol, spicy foods, and even toothpaste can in
fact, eliminate the effects of a remedy.
How long do I need to take Homeopathic remedies?
Some homeopathic treatment plans may only consist of one dose where the
condition is acute, but for chronic conditions, treatment plans may
be over a period of months, involving several consultations,
and there may be the need for multiple different remedies.
Are Homeopaths registered?
Currently, homeopaths are not registered like chiropractors
or osteopaths, under statute, although this is under review with
the UK Government along with acupuncturists and herbal medicine,
currently.
There are professional societies and organisations that maintain
Code of Practices for their members to follow such as The Society of Homeopaths, which is the largest organisation registering
professional homeopaths in the UK.
Does my Health Insurance Provider cover me for this treatment?
As most homeopaths are not qualified doctors, this limits the control
and legal redress available to patients, and likewise, medical health
insurers are unlikely to cover homeopathic treatments.
Check your terms and conditions of your policy and talk to your insurer
before the start of any homeopathic treatments.
Where can I get treatment?
There are 5 NHS homeopathic hospitals in the UK
- London, Liverpool, Glasgow, Bristol and Tunbridge Wells
- and a number of NHS clinics operating in some regions of
the UK where there are regulated health professionals (for example,
doctors and nurses) that operate homeopathic treatments.
Other areas may have no local homeopathic services.
Homeopaths otherwise, generally work privately. Their charges vary
according to regions.
What will my consultation with the homeopath consist of?
The first, and sometimes, only appointment is an initial consultation
and may be for a longer time than other consultations, that may follow.
The homeopath will ask a lot of questions about their patients' lifestyle,
and wellbeing which may relate to some of the symptoms complained
about. |
