What is herbal medicine?
Herbal medicine is a complementary therapy that uses
plants or plant extracts to treat illness.
Herbal medicine aims to treat the whole person not just
the symptoms like many other CAM therapies.
Herbalists believe that the whole herb is needed for greatest
effect, reducing any potential side effects. Different parts
of the plant can have different effects, such as the flower
or seeds.
How do I buy herbal products for my symptoms?
There are numerous products available that claim to treat
a wide range of problems, through 'over the counter' (OTC)
dispensaries, health shops and online shopping outlets.
There are also a number of trained professional medical
herbalists offering individual treatment plans.
Whats the difference in herbal medicine treatment plans offered?
OTC remedies are marketed very much promoting a particular
herb being a remedy for a complaint.
Medical herbalists will work with their patient prescribing a range
of herbs carefully matching these to the patient needs, taking into consideration their current health, lifestyle and wellbeing as well
as their actual complaint symptoms, length of time of their symptoms persisting, and how it affects them.
If two people presented themselves to a medical herbalist with
the same condition, it is unlikely that the prescription written
would be the same.
What symptoms does herbal medicine help?
There are various claims that herbal medicine can treat most
common symptoms. However there is limited scientific evidence
available showing this. Some herbal treatments are more
established and have undergone clinical testing.
Is herbal medicine safe?
The general advice is not to use during pregnancy.
Like any medicine, there can be side-effects and may interact
with other drugs.
Consult a doctor and/or herbal practitioner before making
any changes in prescribed medications.
Is herbal medicine regulated in the UK ?
Most herbal medicines currently fall outside of the regulation
of medicines in the UK.
There is planned legislation for herbal medicine, homeopathy
and acupuncture to shortly be under a system of regulatory
control.
Isn't herbal medicine thousands of years old though?
Over thousands of years plants have been used in many ways
for healing purposes.
The National Institute of Medical Herbalists is one of the world's
oldest professional bodies representing over 550 qualified herbalists. For some 150 years or so, the NIMH is the UK's leading authority on herbal health matters.
Universities around the UK hold a number of different degree and
post graduate courses in herbal medicine, providing UK's source
of competent and confident practitioners.
Where can I meet a herbalist?
A small number of herbal medicine practitioners are employed within the NHS, either in specialist outpatient departments or in
doctor's surgeries. Ask your GP for more information or search
our online facility for trained medical herbalists.
Some GP's are willing to refer their patients for a herbal
medicine consultation.
What is the cost?
This can vary. Most medical herbalists will take at least an hour
to discuss with you, your symptoms, lifestyle and general health
on the first meeting prior to prescribing any herbal medicines.
This cost can vary and one should ask and compare costs locally, as well as the costs of prescriptions and ongoing treatment plan.
Practitioners may want to see you again, perhaps every two
weeks or so after the first prescription.
