What is CAM ?
Complementary and Alternative Medicine, CAM as it is
known, is about using natural remedies to help prevent
and relieve a range of ailments including pain management
and general health promotion.
Statistics show that at least one in five of us use
complementary and alternative medicine where
complementary healthcare has an estimated turnover
in excess of £1.6 billion each year.
Is complementary and alternative medicine available on the NHS?
Some limited treatments are available on the NHS.
Contact your local Primary Care Trust in England;
your local Health Board in Scotland; your local
Health Authority in Wales or your local Health and
Social services board in Northern Ireland.
GP referral
The General Medical Council guide GP's with regard to
referral of CAM and statutory regulated professionals
as does The British Medical Association. 10 % of all
GP's are now actively involved with CAM.
Which CAM professions are regulated?
Osteopaths and chiropractors are regulated by
statute just like doctors and dentists are.
Other practitioners are currently regulated by their
own Councils or Organisations.
A House of Lords report has recommended that both
acupuncture and herbal medicine should also be
regulated by law and possibly homeopathy too.
Complementary and alternative medicine insured practitioners
CAM Regulated practitioners register each year with their
professional body agreeing to follow a code of
practice which grants them professional insurance
indemnity. Patients should check that their practitioners
registration is full and current.
Is CAM provided for on Health Insurers plans?
Chiropractic and osteopathy are two practices that are
well provided on most major Health Insurance plans.
Other treatments are joining them. Check any private
medical cover that you may own before committing
to treatment plans.
How much do complementary and alternative treatments costs?
Treatment plans can vary from professional to professional.
Check how long treatments take, the range of treatment
being given and whether the practitioner is prepared to offer
any discounts for continued health treatment plans suggested.
What should I expect when visiting these practitioners?
Practitioners have standards and rules to follow set by their
Regulator. For more information on what to expect on your
first visit, check their Regulator's website, most of these are
available through this directory.
